Gaels survive the battle with Legacy

It's been years since #1 Bishop Gorman was truly challenged by a local team and coming off of close loss to national #1 ranked Booker T. Washington, the Gaels were looking to cake walk Nevada but #3 ranked Legacy came ready to play.

Opening the game with a squib kick, the Longhorn were in business early. Driving into scoring range, the Longhorns let emotions get to them with a drive stalling personal foul penalty. The power of Julian Castro's leg would drive home a 46-yard field goal to give Legacy the early lead at 3-0 to open the first quarter.

The Longhorn would recover the squib kick again following the score but the Gaels defense stepped up. After trading the ball a few times, bad field position would catch up to the Longhorns early in the second quarter. The Gaels' Russell Booze took advantage slipping into the endzone from 3-yards out.

The following drive, the Longhorns showed some spark but the powerful Gaels defense remained up to the task to slow them down after they entered Gael territory. The Longhorn called on Castro again as he drilled a 50-yard kick to close the scoring gap as the Longhorns were within one point down 7-6 midway through the second quarter.

The Gaels would try to exert themselves at the close of the quarter getting within 10-yards of the end zone but the Longhorns continued to play up. The Gaels would have to settle for a 37-yard kick to extend the lead to 10-6 as time expired in the half.

The second half is usually when the Gaels show their strength and begin to pull away. After missing a 52-yard field goal on their opening drive, the Gaels made the second drive count as Booze sprinted to the end zone from 20-yards out to give his team a 17-12 lead.

The Longhorns weren't ready to fold yet. With Casey Hughes in the mix, the speedster finally broke loose sprinting off the right side for a 59-yard touchdown but a failed two point conversion made the game 17-12 in favor of the Gaels.

In the fourth quarter, the Gaels depth finally wore the Longhorns down defensively, Booze would score early in the quarter from 5-yards out and sophomore running back Jon Shumaker fresh legs provided the finishing blows as he scored from 20-yards out midway through the fourth giving the Gaels a commanding 31-12 lead..

Legacy quarterback Devin Williams would add the final score on a 5 yard run with 39-seconds to go but it was too late as the Gaels opened division play with a 31-18 victory.
