In the "Duel of the Desert" rivalry football game between Cheyenne Desert Shields and the Cimarron-Memorial Spartans, both programs opened the season looking to show the improvement needed show they are ready for a playoff run this season but a momentum change left one team cheering and the other headed back to the drawing board.
With Cimarron playing at home, it was Cheyenne that took control early with a physical play in the trenches and strong running game. Jordan Johnson would cap the Desert Shields first drive with an 8-yard run and they would add another 8-yard score by Zavieh Harrell to close the first quarter riding the surge up 14-0.
Cimarron's quarterback Derek Morefield began to connect on his passing attempts in the second quarter as the Spartans roared back to life with Joe Tito challenging the edge before Morefield would find the space to wiggle in the end zone after a 14-yard scramble to make the score 14-6.
With Cheyenne on its heels, Morefield would strike again minutes later hitting Rasaan Mills on a bubble route with Mills sprinting 54-yards to tie the game at 14-14 after a two point conversion.
With the Spartans defense finding the formula on in the front eight to sniff out the Desert Shield run game, the momentum remained with Cimarron as they added another Morefield to Mills passing touchdown near the close of the third quarter to take control for good.
With the play of linebackers John Mills and Tito, the Spartan defense had a great showing on the night with Dallin Breen leading the defensive line that also logged 4-sacks as they controlled the line of scrimmage from the second quarter on.
For Cimarron, they retained the "Duel of the Desert" trophy for the second year in a row as both teams prepare for a grueling season.
