Nevada 2020 recruiting: Defensive Tackle Prospects to Watch

The Nevada 2019 class saw just three defensive tackle signees but five already hold offers for 2020. With quality depth and overall talent featured among the prospects in this class, it will be a great group to watch:

64 tackles 8 sacks

A well built athlete along the interior defensive line with the athletic ability of a linebacker, Tunei is a force at the point of attack that was credited with 64 tackles and 8 sacks as a junior.

He has long arms with the ability to constantly stack-and-shed versus the run with the foot speed to make plays in pursuit. A great penetrator with quick hands, he shows the lateral quickness and power to develop into a force as an interior pass rusher.

An early commit to UNLV, he is a player that has a very high ceiling.


A powerful nose guard, Finau is a high motor interior player that shows a willingness to play until the whistle with good speed to the edge in pursuit. He is a dominant play when engaged to impressive upper body strength and a desire to dominate opponents showing the ability to deliver impact plays. He lacks the offers at this point but should be among the elite defensive linemen in the state this cycle.

25 tackles 1 sack

An interior run stuffer at nose guard, Helu is a player that shows the ability to maintain great leverage and locate the football at the point of attack. He shows the ability to constantly tie up blocks in the middle with good athletic skill and a great frame.

Logging 25 tackles and a sack as a junior, he holds an offer from Nevada entering season.


77 tackles 3 sacks

A massive big man at the nose, Noma’aea has been a three year standout as a plug on the interior of the line with a strong motor. He is a strong player transitioning to the ball carrier with the power to make plays behind the line of scrimmage.

Logging 77 tackles with 3 sacks as a junior, Noma’aea holds an offer from Northern Arizona.


Hall is a raw framed defensive tackle prospect but he shows the ability to play with great technique while maximizing his long arms. He has good athletic skills and plays with high effort that should allow him to develop into a high quality defender.

Holding offers from San Diego, Northern Arizona and Augustana, he is a defender to watch this cycle.


Underclassmen to Watch        

36 tackles 10 sacks

A complete prospect on the defensive line with a wide range of tools, Ross has the making of being one of the top defensive tackle prospect in his class. He showcases an explosive lower body and great hand quickness that allows him to be equally effective versus the run or as a pass rusher.

Holding offers from the SEC, Pac 12, Big 12 and Big 10, he is coming off a season in which he logged 36 tackles and 10 sacks as a sophomore.


A big bodied and athletic sophomore-to-be, Mells earned his first offer this off-season from UNLV. He will be a player to watch this season as he grows into his frame.

Other 2020 Prospects to Watch    

73 tackles 9 sacks

A hard nosed player with active hands on the interior, Wilson plays with burst off the snap as a very disruptive player versus the run or pass. He logged 73 tackles and 9 sacks as a junior.

Wilson holds an offer from Southwest Missouri State.


39 tackles 3 sacks

Bishop Gorman’s top returning defensive lineman, Fryar displays quick hands and impressive acceleration at the point of attack that allows him to impress as an interior lineman. He is a competitor that plays with great effort and comes off a season in which he logged 39 tackles and 3 sacks as a junior.

44 tackles 2 sacks

An active and instinctive defensive tackle, Lane plays with good quickness on the interior. He does a great job locating the football and maintaining a disruptive presence logging 44 tackles and 2 sacks as a junior.

Jackson had a solid junior season as an impressive athlete on the defensive interior with great lateral quickness and good overall speed. He should have every opportunity to develop into a major impact player combining with Lane on the interior for the Bulldogs.

A rural Nevadan, Fiso is a standout defensive tackle that brings impressive foot speed and quickness at the point of attack. He is disruptive beyond the line of scrimmage with impressive power and speed off the snap.
