On a windy and surprisingly chilly night, the Durango Trailblazers gutted out a tough win versus Basic to position themselves for a likely playoff berth.
Stingy, heavy hitting defense was the theme of the night but Durango would take a key lead on a 17-yard toss from Maverik Cormier to Jaxon Young in the second quarter.
The score would hold for the majority of the contest but a turnover heavy fourth quarter would see both teams jockey for the win. The game momentum would change with Durango still holding the 6-0 lead with the ball at the Basic 3 when Cormier threw an interception in the end zone to Marcellus Mooore who would return it 88-yards. Two plays later David Atkins would add the game tying score with 2:48 left but also added a costly penalty on a spike ball in the end zone. The personal foul allowed the game to remain tied on a failed extra point.
With the game forced into overtime, both teams failed to score in the first round of plays but Durango jumped on board as Durango’s Cole Marquez punched in a short run to take the lead in the second overtime session. Their defense would take care of the rest securing a 12-6 victory in league play.
